Non-violent means not using violence and not involving violence. A non-violent protest is one where people do not hit or smash things as their method. A non-violent person does not settle things by force. In law, a non-violent crime is one like theft or fraud, set against crimes that attack a body — that is a colder, courtroom use, and it does not mean the crime is kind or small. Though actually, non-violent and peaceful are neighbours, not twins. A non-violent action can still be loud, illegal, or very confronting; it only rules out physical force. Films and games get tagged non-violent when they have little or no fighting, which is a lighter, selling use of the same word.
non-violent 的基本意思是不用暴力，也不牽涉暴力。像「a non-violent protest」，指的是大家不靠打人或砸東西來表達意見的抗議。說一個人是 non-violent，就是他不靠武力解決事情。
在法律上，「a non-violent crime」指竊盜、詐欺這類不攻擊人身的罪，和傷害身體的罪相對。這是比較冷、偏法庭用語的用法，並不是說這種罪很輕微或很善良。
