One way to picture it: a hand pressing something down from above so it cannot rise up — the thing is still there underneath, pushing, but it is not allowed to come out.

From the word’s history

From Latin suppressus, past participle of supprimō "press down or under", from sub- "under" + premō "press" — the same premō that gives press, pressure, and compress.

Latin suppressus / supprimō (sub- + premō), as given in the entry's attested origin note

Two branches

suppress a revolt · verb · C2

To stop people from going against a government, especially by using official power or soldiers, so a protest cannot continue.

suppress a feeling · verb · C2

To stop yourself from showing a feeling on your face or in your voice, such as a smile, a laugh, or anger.

忍住
