One way to hold stimulating: something gives you a small push, and you move. You were sitting still — sleepy, or just not thinking about much — and then the coffee, the cold air, the question, the argument arrives, and you are awake and going. The word always describes the thing doing the pushing, never the person being pushed. What changes between its uses is only which part of you wakes up.
