If a person, a smile, a story, or a talk is engaging, it pulls your interest in a kind, pleasant way. You want to keep listening. An engaging speaker is not only interesting; they feel . It is a compliment, a little more careful than fun or nice, but people do say it in speech. A book can be engaging; a child’s manner can be engaging. Though actually, the verb engage has many jobs — to hire, to start a fight, to promise to marry, to get involved. This adjective keeps only the “holds you in a friendly way” piece. It is not the same as engaged (busy, or promised to marry).
