From Middle English signen, partly from Old English seġnian 'to mark' and partly from Old French signer, from Latin signāre, from signum 'a mark'.

Picture a hand writing a name at the bottom of a page. The name itself is just ink, but the moment it lands, something that was only being talked about becomes real and official. Most uses of signing grow out of that one moment: the name goes down, and things change.

可以想成這樣一個畫面：一隻手在紙的下方寫下自己的名字。那幾個字本身只是墨水，但它落下的那一刻，本來只是在談的事情就變成算數的事情。signing 大部分的用法都可以從這個瞬間看出來：名字一寫上去，狀態就不一樣了。只有手語那一支，走的是 sign 的另一條線。
