A 'sign' can be pictured as something visible (a mark, a board, a movement, an event) that stands for something else and lets it be read — it points beyond itself to a meaning, a message, or a hidden truth. Whether it is a road board, a raised , a plus symbol, or a change in someone's behaviour, the same move is happening: one thing on the surface tells you about something you cannot see directly.
