From Latin sevēritās, from sevērus 'stern, strict, serious' — the word starts with a person's stern manner, and the other uses extend from there.
一種想法是:severity 經由法語回到拉丁文 sevēritās,來自 sevērus(嚴格的、不苟言笑的)。也就是說,這個字最早畫的就是「人的態度」——先有不通融的人,才有不通融的處罰;等到把同樣的眼光放到天氣、傷勢、考題上,就變成我們今天最常看到的「嚴重程度」。
