An ornament is a small decorative object — something added purely to make a place or person look nicer, not because it's useful. Christmas ornaments hang on a tree; a garden might have a stone ornament; a shelf might hold ornaments that are just pretty, not functional. As a verb, 'to ornament' something means to it, though this verb use is more formal and less common than the noun. People sometimes use 'ornament' about a person too, meaning someone valued mainly for looking good in a role, which can sound a little or old-fashioned.
