Picture two things that were together, now pulled apart with a gap left between them — so they cannot mix, touch, or reach each other. The word can point at the pulling apart (the act), at the gap itself (the state), or at the stretch of time the gap lasts. Whether the gap is between two liquids, two people, or two areas of a job is just a change of what fills the picture.
