If two things are separable, you can take them apart, or you can think about them as two different things. A lid may be separable from a box. Two ideas may be separable even when people always mention them together. The word is a little formal. English teachers also use it for separable verbs: verbs with a small extra word, like “turn off,” where you can put the object in the middle (“turn the light off”). The opposite idea is inseparable — things you cannot, or almost cannot, pull apart.
