Picture a tiny hard grain you drop into the soil — and out of that small thing a whole new plant grows. That's the seed: small, easy to overlook, yet it carries the start of something much bigger inside it. Almost every other meaning keeps this picture — a small thing that a bigger thing grows out of: the seed of an idea, the seed (offspring) of a family line, even a 'seeded' player who is placed at the start of a tournament.
