Reap originally means to cut down and gather a crop when it's ripe, like wheat or rice - the old, physical work of harvesting. Today people mostly use it to talk about getting the results of work done earlier, good or bad, as in the saying 'you reap what you sow' - meaning what happens to you later comes from what you did before.
