A kernel is the small, soft part inside a hard shell or husk — like the yellow part of a corn kernel, or the soft center inside a nut's shell. People also use it in a wider way for the most important, central part of an idea, saying things like "there's a kernel of truth in what he said," meaning a small but real true part is hiding inside a bigger story.
