Lineage is the line of parents, , and so on that a person comes from — who was born from whom. It is a formal word for family through time. You also hear it in science for a line of animals or plants that come from the same earlier group, and in some arts or fighting schools for the line of teachers. Though actually, the “line” here is the family line, not a queue of people waiting. It does not belong only to kings and queens; any family has a lineage, even if nobody wrote it down.

組成From Middle English linage, from Old French linage, from ligne, from Latin linea (a line). In English it is line + the ending -age.
