From rank: Middle English rank 'line, row', from Old French ranc, from Frankish *hring 'ring'; a doublet of ring.
源自 rank，來自古法文 ranc「一排、一列」；和 ring 同源。
You can think of ranking as a line of people standing in order, best at the front. Once the line exists, three different things can be named after it: the work of forming the line, the spot where you are standing in it, and the person standing at the very front. English uses the same word for all three.
