'Salon' came into English in the 1690s from French salon, from Italian salone 'large hall', an augmentative of sala 'hall'. It first meant a large room in a palace or great house; by 1810 it named the reception room of a Parisian lady, by the 1870s-1880s the exhibitions and fashionable gatherings held in such rooms, and only in 1913 an establishment for hairdressing and beauty care.
salon 在一六九零年代從法文 salon 進入英文，源頭是義大利文 salone「大廳」（sala「廳」的加大版）。它一開始就是指宮殿或大宅裡的大房間；一八一零年左右用來指巴黎女主人的會客廳，一八七零至八零年代延伸到在那種房間裡辦的畫展與名流聚會，一直到一九一三年才拿來指美髮美容的店。所以「大廳→聚會→店」是有時間順序的一條線，不是三個各自獨立的意思。
