reception room · noun · B2
A large room in a grand house where visitors are received.
One way to hold 'salon': a large, handsome room in a grand house — high ceilings, good chairs, the room you receive people in. Everything else the word does grows out of that room: the gatherings held in it, and later the shops that borrow its elegant air.
'Salon' came into English in the 1690s from French salon, from Italian salone 'large hall', an augmentative of sala 'hall'. It first meant a large room in a palace or great house; by 1810 it named the reception room of a Parisian lady, by the 1870s-1880s the exhibitions and fashionable gatherings held in such rooms, and only in 1913 an establishment for hairdressing and beauty care.

literary/artistic gathering · noun · B2
A regular meeting where people talk about art, books, or music, especially popular in the past in France.
hair salon · noun · A2
A shop where you can get your hair washed, cut, or styled, or have beauty care.
