In old-fashioned houses, a parlor was a special room for sitting and talking with guests - a bit like a formal living room, kept nice for visitors. That meaning has mostly disappeared from daily life, but the word survived in the names of certain shops - an ice cream parlor, a beauty parlor, a tattoo parlor, a funeral parlor. So today, when students see 'parlor', it's almost always a type of shop or business, not a room in a home.
