From Spa, a town in Belgium where iron-bearing spring water was drunk as a cure since medieval times.

Picture warm mineral water and people coming to sit in it because they believe it will do them good. That is the oldest picture in the word: a place you travel to for the water. As the water stayed but the reason — health, beauty, relaxing — the word followed, and in American English it shrank all the way down to the hot tub in someone's back garden.

可以想成：一池溫熱的礦泉水，人們特地過來泡，相信對身體有好處。這是這個字裡最老的畫面：為了水而去的一個地方。後來水還在，去的理由變寬了——保健、美容、放鬆——這個字也跟著走；到了美式英文，它甚至縮小成後院裡那個冒著熱水的浴缸。
