Picture one thing into the slot another thing normally fills — a player coming off the bench, honey going into the recipe where sugar should be. The slot stays the same; only what sits in it changes. The word covers the one who steps in, the act of putting it in, and the doubt that often comes with it: is the replacement really as good?
