ream

n

核心畫面

Picture a block of paper wrapped as one package and set on the counter: not loose sheets, a bundle you have to lift with both hands. That bundle is a ream. Everything on this side of the word is that bundle — first as an exact amount you can buy, then as the weight of it when somebody hands you far more than you wanted.

From the word’s history

The packet's Wiktionary note traces this noun through Old French raime to Arabic rizma, a bundle. The bundle is not a metaphor added later; it is what the word named from the start.

字典的來源說明寫著:這個名詞經由古法文 raime 進入英文,更早來自阿拉伯文 rizma,意思是「一捆、一包」。所以「一包」不是後來加上去的比喻。那就是這個字最早指的東西。

Wiktionary etymology supplied in this packet (kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:622966774): "from Old French raime ... from Arabic رِزْمَة (rizma, 'bundle')"

One branch

一包紙,和那包紙的重量

同一包紙,先被當成數量,再被當成份量。

noun · C1

A ream is a standard package of paper sold as one unit: 500 sheets in the US, or 480 sheets in Britain.

核心畫面

This is a different word wearing the same spelling. Picture a turning tool pushed down into a hole that is already there, a thin layer off the wall all the way round. The hole comes out wider and smoother, and a small pile of is left behind. Someone on the receiving end of that action does not have a good time — which is the direction the slang uses take.

From the word’s history

The packet's Wiktionary note calls the origin uncertain, but lists this verb as a doublet of room, with German raumen (to make room) and Dutch ruimen (to clear out) as cognates. Reaming, on that reading, is making room inside something.

字典說這個動詞的來源不完全確定,但把它跟 room(空間)列為同源的一對,並列出德文 räumen(騰出空間)、荷蘭文 ruimen(清空)當親戚。照這條線索想,鉸孔就是在材料裡「騰出空間」。來源本身標著不確定,所以這只是線索。

Wiktionary etymology supplied in this packet (kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:622957323): "Etymology uncertain ... Doublet of room. Cognates: German raumen ('to make room'), Icelandic ryma"

Two branches

把洞挖大、修整

這一組就是核心畫面本身,還停在工具和材料上。

verb · C1

To make a hole bigger, smoother, or the right shape by turning a tool inside it, and to clean the rough bits out of a hole that has just been drilled. The tool itself is called a reamer.

把(洞)鉸大、修光

被從裡到外刮一遍的人

可以想成把那個動作從材料搬到人身上:被刮的那一方站著不動,刮的人一路刮到底。這是幫助記憶的連結,不是已經證實的來歷——維基詞典把這些俚語跟鉸孔列在同一個字源下,但沒有說明它們怎麼長出來的。

verb · C1

To speak to someone in a loud, angry way about something they have done wrong.
