To berate someone is to speak to them because they have done something wrong — not one short “that’s bad,” but a stream of hard words. A parent, a boss, or a coach might berate a person, sometimes in front of others; it feels sharp and public. It is a fairly strong, slightly verb. Newspapers like it. In everyday talk, more often hear yell at, shout at, or tell off. Though actually berate is only about the talking, not about hitting or taking something away. You berate with your mouth. It is transitive: you berate someone (you need that someone).
