If you enlarge something, you make it bigger. If something enlarges, it grows bigger by itself. You enlarge a photo so you can see the faces. A shop may enlarge its window. A doctor may say an organ is enlarged, meaning it has grown more than it should — that is a body use, not a happy one. There is also a more formal British use: to enlarge on a point means to say more about it, not to make it physically bigger. Though actually, bigger is not always better. Do not mix this with enhance: enhance is make better; enlarge is make bigger.

組成From Middle English enlargen, from Old French enlargier / enlargir. You can also see it as en- + large: en- here means 'make', and large means 'big', so 'make big'.
