核心畫面

One way to hold propel is a force sitting behind something and sending it forward. The force is not a single tap; it works on the thing and the thing travels. Put a motor behind a boat and the boat crosses the water. Put a hand on a person's back and the person goes through the door. Put one lucky event behind someone's life and they end up somewhere they were not before. The thing being moved changes from a hull to a body to a whole situation, but the picture stays the same: power at the back, movement at the front.

From the word’s history

Latin propello is pro- forward plus pello to push, so the word literally means to push forward.

拉丁文 propellō 由 pro-(向前)和 pellere(推)組成,字面就是「往前推」。這個組合跟今天三個用法的畫面完全一致。

Two branches

把東西或人往前推送

這一支就是字面本身:真的有東西在空間裡移動,而且背後真的有力量。差別只在被推的是物體還是人。

verb · B2

To push or drive something forward so that it moves. The force can come from an engine, from wind or water, or from a person's own arms and legs.

推進/推動前進

把人推進新的處境

這一支把同樣的畫面搬離實體空間:移動的不是身體,而是一個人在人生裡的位置。這是教學上的連結,不是歷史上的另一條來源。

verb · B2

To suddenly move someone into a new situation, or to push them into doing something, as if a force outside them had carried them there.

把(某人)一舉推上/推進
