From the word’s history

'Prize' (a reward, and the verb 'to value') traces to Latin 'pretium' = price, worth, reward, through Old French 'preisier' — the same root that gives us 'price' and 'praise'. So a prize is literally 'what something is worth'.

獎賞這個 prize（以及動詞「珍視」）來自拉丁文 pretium（價格、價值、報酬），經古法文 preisier，跟 price（價格）、praise（讚美）同源。所以 prize 骨子裡就是「一件東西值多少」——值得拿來當獎賞、值得珍惜的那份價值。
