From Latin privilegium = privus 'private' + lex 'law' — literally 'a law for one person'. That is still exactly what all four modern senses describe: a rule or an opening that applies to you and not to everyone.
privilege 來自拉丁文 privilegium，由 privus（私人的）加 lex（法律，也是 legal 的字根）組成，字面就是「為個人訂的法律」。這個組合解釋了為什麼這個字在英文裡總帶著一點不平等的味道——它從一開始講的就不是「大家都有的權利」（那是 right），而是「只有某些人有的例外」。特別是第 3 個意思，直接回到最字面的字源：真的有一條法律在保護那段對話。
