formal polite request · adjective · B1
Used in a polite, formal way to ask someone to do something, especially in the phrase 'I would be grateful if you could ...'.
One way to picture grateful: someone did something kind, and now you are holding the wish to thank them. The feeling always points back at a person and at what they did — which is why English says grateful to somebody for something.
