Someone standing in the middle with everyone watching, sending something forward and letting go of it. The ball leaves the hand and the play begins; the idea leaves the mouth and the decision is now the other side's. Pitch is the throw, -er is the one who does it.

Straightforwardly pitch + -er: the agent noun of the verb. Nothing to do with the jug, which came into English from Old French by a different road.

From Middle English picher, from Old French pichier 'small jug', from Late or Medieval Latin pīcārium. It is a doublet of beaker — the two words come from the same source and both name something you drink from.
