In Irish sport, a hurler is a player of hurling: a fast ball game played with wooden sticks by two teams of fifteen. Each player carries a flat stick called a hurley. You may catch the small hard ball, strike it in the air, or hit it along the ground, and you score under the bar or over it. It looks a little like hockey if hockey were allowed to fly, and it is one of Ireland’s national games, still played hard in schools and counties, not a museum piece. Though actually, the name of the game itself is hurling, not hurler. A hurler is one of those fifteen people on a side. English also uses hurler more widely for anyone who hurls — who throws with real force. In American baseball talk, a hurler is a pitcher. So the same word can mean an Irish stick-and-ball player or a baseball pitcher; the sentence around it tells you which game you are in. There is also a family name Hurler from German; that is a different path, not the sports word.
