Something held up in both hands and set down in front of someone: fruit on a temple table, a coin in the collection bag. From the moment it is set down it is not yours any more, and whether it is taken well is not up to you. Every other use keeps that posture and only changes who is standing on the other side — a friend, an audience, a customer.

Offering is simply offer plus -ing: the noun of the act of holding something out. The word took over from the native Old English hūsl.

offering 就是 offer 加上 -ing，也就是「拿出去給」這個動作的名詞形。它在英文裡取代了原本古英文的 hūsl 這個字。
