核心畫面

Picture the words themselves — the thing you hand over when you were wrong. English keeps that object and puts it into several fixed frames: sent ahead when you cannot come, made as you leave, refused when you stand by what you did. Two further uses drift away from regret altogether: a written defence of a belief, and a way of saying something barely counts as the thing it claims to be.

社交場合的固定說法

同一段致歉的話被放進特定的場合,久了就固定成兩個說法,而且都用複數。

apology (for absence) · noun · B1

a message you send to a meeting to say you cannot come.

請假致歉

明白表示不道歉

把同一樣東西反過來用:明講「我不給這個」,等於在說我不覺得自己錯。

make no apology for something · noun · B2

If you make no apology for something, you are not sorry because you think you were right.

不後悔

為信念寫的辯護

這一層跟「認錯」相反:它是被批評之後站出來說明立場,屬於文學與哲學傳統裡的用法。

apology (formal defense) · noun · B2

a statement in which you defend something you believe in after other people have criticized it.

辯護;辯解

勉強稱得上的爛貨

帶著嘲意的用法:這樣東西差到只能算是那個名字的一個「抱歉版本」。

an apology for something (a poor example) · noun · B2

a very bad example of something.

蹩腳貨

Also in this word
