Picture a hand letting go: money into a box, an old coat into a bag, blood into a bag at the clinic. Nothing is being sold and nothing is owed back — the thing simply moves from someone who has it to someone or something that needs it. That releasing movement can be held as the picture inside 'donation'; once you have the movement, the word can also swing over and name whatever it was that moved.
