From the word’s history

From Latin tributum 'a fixed payment', from tribuere 'to allot, pay'. It first meant money a weaker ruler paid a stronger one; the 'offering to show respect' sense arose in the 1580s — the core softened from 'handing something over in submission' to 'offering something in admiration'.

來自拉丁文 tributum『按份繳納的款項』，源自 tribuere『分配、繳付』。最早指弱國向強國繳的貢金；到了一五八〇年代才延伸出『表敬意的獻禮』。可以想成核心從『交出東西以示臣服』軟化成『獻上東西以示敬佩』。
