verb · B2
To read a word, a number, or a sign wrongly, so that you take in something different from what is really written there.
Eyes on a page, taking something off it — and what they take is not what is written. The reading feels normal while it happens. The gap only shows up later, in what you do with it.
From Old English misraedan, mis- plus read, where mis- marks the action as done wrongly.
Wiktionary, packet source_ref kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:187779187:8665 — etymology_text: From Middle English misreden, from Old English misraedan (to advise wrongly; read wrongly), equivalent to mis- + read.
