To mishear is to catch the sound, but not the right words. The other person did speak; your ears — or the noise around you — just handed you a different sentence. You thought they said Tuesday when they said Thursday. You thought they called your name when they called someone else’s. It is not the same as not hearing at all; that is missing the sound. Mishearing is hearing something and building the wrong picture from it. People say it all the time in ordinary talk: “Sorry, I misheard you.” It is friendly. It lets you fix a mix-up without making anyone look careless. Though actually, we also mishear because we expected a certain word and our brain filled it in. The past is misheard.
組成mis- (wrongly, amiss) + hear. From Middle English misheren, from Old English mishȳran / mishīeran, “to hear amiss,” also once “not listen, disobey.”
