Think of a manner as the way a person does a thing, watched from outside: how they hand you the plate, how they say your name, how they hold themselves when others are in the room. Adding -ed makes the word say that this way of doing things is noticeable — the person carries a manner. From there, everything depends on one question: is that manner there for the people in the room, or for the look of it? Put well or bad in front and you are judging how the person treats others. Leave the word alone and you are saying the manner has taken over, and what you see is the doing rather than the person.

From the word’s history

The word is manner plus -ed and goes back to Middle English manered, so its parts already say it: carrying a manner.

Two branches

adjective · B1

In compounds such as well-mannered, bad-mannered or ill-mannered, the first part says how polite or impolite someone is in the way they behave towards other people.

adjective · C1

Behaving, speaking, or writing in a way that is not natural, because it has been worked out to make people admire you. Calling something mannered is a criticism: it looks planned and put on rather than real.
