A manner is the 'how' of something — not what you do, but the way it gets done or happens. Picture the same action carried out in two different styles: the same words said gently or , the same job done carefully or . That 'flavour of how' is the seed of the whole word: from the way a thing is done, to the way a person behaves, to the polite ways a group agrees on, to fixed phrases that all point at a style or manner of doing.
