Courteous means polite in a careful, respectful way — you treat people as if they matter. You listen, you do not push in, you leave the other person a little dignity. It is close to polite, but a little more formal, and it often points to thoughtfulness, not only to rules. You will hear it in shops, hotels, and in letters (“Thank you for your courteous reply”). Long ago it named the manners of a king’s court; that older shine is still in the word. Though actually you can be courteous and still say no. It is how you treat someone, not whether you give them everything they want.
