bait / decoy object · noun · C2

One useful picture: a small bright object dangled on a line to make a fish swim toward the hook. The object is not the food the fish wants — it only looks like it. The pull comes from what it seems to promise.
From Old French loirre, a Frankish-derived word for the feathered decoy a falconer swung on a cord to call the hawk back — a made object used to draw a living thing in. The modern senses keep exactly that: a thing put out to pull something toward you.
