You can think of loving as love that has moved out of the heart and into the hands. Someone is not only feeling warm about you; they are doing something about it — holding you, making your tea, fixing the thing you broke. Everything this word does grows from that one picture of love showing up in action: love aimed at a person, love aimed at a thing someone is making, and love named as the thing itself.

From the word’s history

The source records loving as love + -ing, inherited from Middle English lovyng(e) and Old English lufung. The -ing keeps the verb's action inside the word, which fits a word that is about love being done rather than only felt.
