If work is painstaking, someone has been very careful and has gone slowly over every small part. They have not rushed, and they have not skipped the hard bits. You use it about research, repair, art, , building — anything that needs patience. It is a compliment: the person did not cut corners. The word comes from an older phrase, to take pains, which means to try hard and be careful. The “pains” here are effort, not the hurt in your body. Even so, many people in the United States say it as if it were pain plus staking, like putting a stick in the ground, because that is how it sounds there. That is not how the word was built, but it is how a lot of people hear it. The word is a little formal; in easy talk you might just say really careful, or they took their time.
組成pains（心力、功夫；來自 take pains）+ taking（花上、用上）。美國常見讀法聽起來像 pain + staking，但那是後來聽成那樣，不是本來的組法。
