Think of standing in the doorway of an empty place and asking one question: could a person actually live here? The roof keeps the rain out, the tap runs, there is somewhere to sleep and eat. That is the line liveable draws — not a good place, just a possible one. Everything else the word does is that same line moved. Raise it, and the place is no longer merely possible but pleasant, the kind of city people put at the top of a list. Carry it off the map and onto a life, and it asks the same question about a hard month. Carry it onto a pay slip, and it asks it about money.
