Start with the colour of fresh grass and growing leaves. The word green is literally a cousin of grow — it began as 'the colour of living, growing plants'. So under almost every use sits a young, living, sprouting plant: from that one image come 'covered in plants', 'not yet ripe / inexperienced', 'caring for nature', and even the queasy or jealous shades of a face turning green.
