One way to hold graduated is to picture a flight of steps rather than a ramp. Someone has already cut the whole thing into levels, and the levels sit in order: this much, then a bit more, then a bit more again. A tax table is that staircase written in money. The side of a measuring is the same staircase printed in lines. And a person who has climbed every step of a course to the top is graduated too.
