  1. 1沒有標示的、無標記的（unmarked police car＝偵防車、便衣警車；unmarked grave＝無名墓）

    Having nothing written or printed on it to tell you what it is or whose it is. An unmarked box could hold anything; an unmarked grave has no stone with a name; an unmarked road has no sign to say where it goes; an unmarked police car is an ordinary-looking car with no police badge or colours on it, so you cannot tell what it is until it stops you. That last one is by far the most common in the news, and it shows the flavour of the word well: the missing label is often the point, either because someone wanted to hide something or because someone was forgotten. So the word often carries a small shadow of anonymity or neglect — an unmarked grave is sad, an unmarked van is worrying. The word has two other uses your students will meet. In school, unmarked homework is homework the teacher has not yet corrected or given a score to. And of a body or a surface, unmarked means , with no scratch or stain on it — 'the table was still unmarked after twenty years'. Same shape, different sense of 'mark'.
