Picture a young female human — a female child. That is the simple heart of the word. From there it stretches up in age (a young woman, your daughter, your girlfriend), sideways into warm or familiar address (calling a woman, a female pet, or a close friend 'girl'), and into a few older, now-dated job and servant uses.
