From the word’s history

The dictionaries do not settle where this word came from. One line takes it to North Germanic, comparing Norwegian flunsa, to hurry; another suggests it was simply built on the pattern of pounce and bounce. Both stories point at the same feeling: quick, and with a bounce in it.
