To sashay is to walk in a confident, way, moving your body a little from side to side, as if you know people are looking — and you do not mind. It can sound fun, proud, or a bit teasing, depending on who says it. You sashay into a room; you do not sashay when you are late for the bus. It is informal. Dancers also use sashay for a slide to the side, which is how the word came in; in everyday English, though, the walking meaning is the one you will hear. It can be a noun too, for that kind of walk.
