When people leave somewhere all together, on purpose, to show they are angry or refuse to go along with something. There are two everyday uses. At work it means a strike — workers stop and leave the factory or office, usually to force the boss to talk. In a meeting, a parliament, or a talk, it means people stand up and walk out while it is still going on, so everyone can see them refuse to stay. The point is always that it is a group and it is public: one person quietly leaving is not a walkout. It is a noun. When you want the verb you split it back into two words — the workers walked out, so there was a walkout. News writers like this word because it is short, so you meet it in headlines a lot. A walkout can be short (an hour) or the start of a long strike.
