A flat, narrow fold, pressed or sewn into cloth — the kind that runs down a skirt, a pair of trousers, a school uniform, or a kilt. One fold is a pleat; a row of them is what makes a pleated skirt. The fold can open a little when you walk, then fall back into line. As a verb, to pleat fabric is to fold it that way on purpose. It is a clothes-and-sewing word, not a general word for any fold (a fold in paper is usually just a fold). In history it is a close cousin of plait: they come from the same Old French word, but in today’s English a pleat is a fold in cloth, and a plait is usually a braid, especially in hair (British English; Americans more often say braid).
