To stomp is to walk putting your feet down hard and heavily, or to bring one foot down hard on the ground or on something. The sound is the point — everyone can hear you. Most often it carries emotion, and that emotion is usually anger or sulking: a teenager stomps out of the room and up the after an argument. If someone stomps off, they are letting the whole house know they are upset. You can also stomp on a thing: stomp on a , stomp on someone's foot. And it works without anger too — you stomp your feet to keep warm in cold weather, or to shake snow or mud off your shoes, or to make noise with a crowd at a concert. It is informal and slightly American-flavoured; British speakers often say 'stamp' for the same actions. In sports writing and headlines you may see a stronger, looser use — one team 'stomped' another, meaning beat them badly — which is slang built on the idea of crushing something underfoot.
